Dear Parents and Carers

This week sees the beginning of the meetings with parents and carers for our newest of learners. These interviews are either on zoom ( morning meetings) or onsite (afternoon appointments).

If you have not been able to arrange a time, I encourage you to email yamp@lism.catholic.edu.au and ask for a call back.

These interviews are set to support all learners and to build the relationship with the staff regarding goal setting for the children. All staff value this opportunity and we thank you for your engagement. 

This week we received a Work Place Health and Safety Grant from the CSO. This will be used to target the COLA(big top) which needs lining and plumbing repairs.  It is great to be able to access this support .  We expect the work to take place over Easter and this will offer less lost tennis balls, a sensory trail and less bird roosts. Winning all round.

Please keep your child's photo envelope safe as it has thier unique student code.

Family envelopes are available from the school office if required.

If you are paying online, family envelopes still need to be filled out and returned to the school office.

RE News

As part of our Catholic identity as St James school, we have been learning about who St James the disciple was and what his relationship was with Jesus. 

Saint James the Greater was one of Jesus' first disciples. James was fishing with his father and John the Apostle when Jesus came to the shores of the Sea of Galilee and called for the fisherman, who were unable to catch any fish that day, to dip their nets in the water once again.

     When the fishermen followed Jesus' instructions, they found their nets full, and after emptying the fish on board, the boats nearly sank from their weight.

     Later, James was one of only three called by Jesus to witness his Transfiguration, and when he and his brother wanted to call fire upon a Samaritan town, both were rebuked by Jesus.

     Following Christ's Ascension, James spread the Gospel across Israel and the Roman kingdom as well. He traveled and spread the Word for nearly forty years in Spain.

As part of this identity journey as a Catholic school community, we have commissioned world-renowned, local indigenous Yaegl artist, Frances Belle-Parker to design and paint a beautiful artwork for our school foyer, that depicts the story of James, the fisherman being called by Jesus at the boats. The painting will also depict the local Yaegl stories of the Clarence river and represent our local indigenous community. We are very excited to embark on this fabulous project and work with Frances.

LOP News

St James Primary students will be participating in “Vegetable Week" which is a school based program funded by NSW Health. The idea behind Vegetable Week is to increase childrens’s knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards vegetables. 

We will be mulching and restocking our vegetable gardens as part of the week and with this in mind we have decided to have a mufti day where the students wear clothes to garden in.

It will be held on Tuesday March 16 and the students will donate a gold coin to help with purchasing new seeds and plants.

During the next few weeks we will be featuring ideas and activities for Vegetable week in our newsletter.

We love our patches from scratch and are looking forward to growing and supplying vegetables to our school community during autumn.

Sport News

Swimming

We have 7 students from St James competing today at the Diocesan Carnival in Murwillumbah. We wish them all the best and look forward to sharing some results with you next week.

Basketball

Our Basketball program started today down at the Raymond Laurie centre for students in Stages 1, 2 and 3. We were successful in gaining a Sporting Schools grant to cover the cost of the coaching sessions and bus travel so there is no cost to families for this program which will run for the next 4 weeks.

Winter Sport Trials

The Winter Sport Trials set down for Wednesday this week were washed out and have been rescheduled for next Wednesday 3rd March. Good luck to those students trialling. 

Cross Country

Due to a clash with our Basketball program our school Cross Country event has been moved forward a day to Thursday, 25th March. Students will begin training for this in their morning P.E sessions next week.

Early Stage 1

This week in Early Stage One we went on a hunt to count and collect objects outside our classroom. Students were given a one digit card and a two digit card. Lola found 13 big blades of grass, Dolly found 12 gumnuts, Sebastian found 7 gum leaves and Oliver counted 7 shovels. In mathematics we are focusing on counting collections of objects, ordering, reading and representing numbers 0-30. We had so much fun counting and checking our friends' collections carefully!

Stage 1

Stage one has been exploring the weather in science and what a fantastic time they are having! Using the green screen they have been acting as professional weather reporters, collecting data from the environment to deliver their verdict.

Stage 2

Stage 2 are looking forward to beginning a History project next week with the Catholic Schools Office (CSO) and Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA). The students will be developing their historical research and inquiry skills over the coming weeks through participation in different tasks designed by the CSO/NORPA team. The project will culminate in week 8 with a performance that will take place at school and some follow up tasks that will require the students to “think like a historian”. We look forward to sharing some of our work with you over the coming weeks.

Next week we will send out a traffic plan for K and D.
